SHERWOOD ISLAND OPEN Westport, CT.

The sky was still dark and
the fog had rolled in
as we pulled up to the Sherwood Island State Park gates.
Under the supervision of Whit Cooper
this PGDA C-tier event
on a temporary course overlooking Long Island Sound
at Connecticut's oldest state park
is gaining popularity
and spurring serious discussions
of a permanent course there in the future.

Mother nature was not so kind
as the rain fell steady throughout the morning
This sweet pavilion provided shelter for some practice putting
and a spot to dry off.
The inclement conditions and lengthy layout,
some 1000+ feet longer than last year,
put birdies at a premium and pars a necessity.

Highlights of round one included
a two-way tie atop the AM1 field
with fellow Mainers Alex Foley and Joe Roy
both posting scores of 58s.
Vibram's own Greg Wintrob, R.I.
shot the hot first round with 53
and held a 1 throw lead over Norwalk native Jeff Cahill
in the Pro Open division

The weather was more forgiving after lunch
and round two was dry at least from the sky.
Alex Foley shot 58 54 112 (pictured above)
held on in his 1st out-of-state PDGA event
to win the AM1 division.

Wintrob continued his solid play as the weather broke
carding a 2nd Round 50 to finish 53 50 103.
That bested 2nd place Cahill's 54 52 106
and five throws better than CT's Matt Buono's 57 51 108
and Mainer Jason Dore 56 52 108
who tied for third

Farwell for today
Sherwood Island State Park
you are truly a gem piece of real estate
and if to only play on you once a year
would be a honor
but to not have year-round DG
would be sad.
Keep up the Great Work Whit & Co.
& hopefully more will be able to enjoy
what we did at
the 2011 Sherwood Island OPEN...
playin Disc Golf
on a soggy saturday
along the Long Island Sound.
